Transitioning Back to Work
You’re thinking that it may be time to think about going back to work. Your kids are in school more hours now and you’re looking for something meaningful to do with your time. Or, economics being what they are, you need the money. You used be a ____________ (fill in “lawyer,” “market researcher,” “college professor,” etc. -- those are only some of the people I know in your shoes) but you don’t think you want to go back to that again. You’d really like to find something different. Your resume has a huge gap, and you’re worried that no-one will even look at it.
You have a few options:
One is "Do-It-Yourself": go to the bookstore, buy some books on how to change careers and how to write a resume, and get going. That may very well work, but you may find that you’re stumped as to which of the millions of books out there you should choose. That’s not too hard a problem to deal with (I recommend a few books on the “Resources” page of this site). Much more significant is that you may find it hard to stay on track…to really progress in this the way you’d like to. It’s easy to languish in the “thinking about going back to work” stage (particularly when you’ve got swimming practice to get the kids to and birthday parties to buy presents for, and you’re expecting guests this weekend and you have to prepare for that…you know how it goes…).
Two is to check out your options for how to work with
me, and give me a
call. Using conversation, introspection and exercises, we will figure out together the kinds of work you might really be interested in. I’ll help you write a resume that could actually convince someone to interview you, and I’ll support and guide you in the process of looking for and finding your new job. I’ll share with you everything I know about how to conduct a successful job-search. I’ll challenge you to keep moving on it when other things seem to push your transition off your radar. And then, when you accept an offer, I’ll celebrate with you. What could be better?
